Role Libraries, Information centers and associations in organizing professional training in Bangladesh
East West University:
East West University Library organized a series of workshop, training, seminar on different subjects one of which is international workshop on health information literacy for the development of library professionals of Bangladesh. EWU library organized several workshop and training in last two years which are briefly given below:
- Four day long outdoor Workshop on Greenstone Digital library for building digital library jointly with waikato University, New Zealand
- Three days Workshop on Information Literacy for the faculties and students of EWU jointly with INASP
- Five days workshop on integrated library system: Koha and Greenstone Digital library software for building digital library
- Four day long International workshop on Health Information Literacy jointly with IFLA.
- Seminar on digital preservation in south Asian perspective
- Seminar on Digital library and Virtual reference service
Beside these EWU library jointly organized on a seminar on Media and Information Literacy with dept. of Information science and library Management, University of Rajshahi.
All of these workshop and seminars were organized for the development of library and library professionals in Bangladesh. EWU got tremendous positive response from these type of program.
BRAC University Library
BRAC university library organized four different types of workshop and training for the library professionals of Bangladesh last two years. Their training focused mainly on the following topics
- Marc 21
- Integrated library software: Koha
- BRAC University has conducted a workshop entitled 'Developing a Digital Institutional Repository at BRAC University: Experiences and Challenges' recently. Library professionals from different universities and institutes participated in the workshop
- Two day training on Discovery tool :Vufind
In these workshop library professionals from around the country joined and gathered valuable knowledge on updated technology.
North South University:
NSU library organized Certificate Course on Digital and Online Librarianship on regular basis. This course is designed for all types of user of library including library professionals, student, researchers etc who are interested on digital and online library, cyber technology, web design and searching.
- Operating Systems for Digital & Online Librarianship
- Library Database Management and Web Design
- Access and Use of Digital & Online Resources
This course help the training people to search, download online resources, subscribing online resources and management, resources sharing and designing and maintaining individual websites
Independent University, Bangladesh:
Independent University, Bangladesh library organized a seven days long international workshop on Information Literacy in 2009 for Library professionals of Bangladesh and other SAARC countries mainly but was not limited to this region. Beside the saarc countries participants also joined from Tanzania, Philippines, Indonesia, and Iran.
“The objective of the workshop was
- Introducing the concept of “Information Literacy” in Bangladesh and other SAARC countries (not limited to these countries).
- Providing hands on training on “Information Literacy”.
- Building capacity of the library professionals of the SAARC region (not limited to this countries).
- Making the librarians competent to run “Information Literacy” programme after the training.”1
BALID (Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists):
BALID organized several training on e-resources management and searching skills in digital environment for the senior level library professionals of Bangladesh.
- One training was held at Independent university on Training on ‘E-resources management’ on 31 July 2010. The participants learn from the training how to subscribe and manage e-resources including remote access service with my Athens. They also learn about licensing, archiving limitation, procurement and registration process of some registration based e-journal databases.
- A day long training was held on Literature Search Skills in Digital Environment at ICDDRB on Saturday 23 October 2010 where the participants learn about advanced level searching different journal databases including PUBMED, Hinari etc.
- A day-long training program on Searching Skills and Management of E-resources was held in Rajshahi University Central Library, Rajshahi, on 10 December 2010. The training programme was jointly organized by Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists, and Documentalists (BALID) and Rajshahi University Central Library.
Bangladesh Academy of Science (BAS):
The Bangladesh Academy of Science (BAS) promote research in pure an applied science and their practical applications to problems of national welfare in Bangladesh; disseminate scientific knowledge among people; publish proceedings, journals, memoirs, transactions and other publications on scientific subjects; hold conferences and so on. The Academy is the leading scientific organization of the scientists of eminence in Bangladesh and represents internationally the scientific community of the country
BAS organized a 2 day long training program on Management of e-Resources which was held on 31 March – 1 April 2010 in the Computer Lab. of the Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka.
The program was designed for the primary group and advanced group of the library officers and IT officers of all network member organizations i.e. Universities, research and development organizations of Bangladesh. The trainees of the participants were trained on many issues regarding better use and better management of e-Resources.
ICDDR,B:
LISU offers and organizes a highly practical-oriented, intensive training programme on Information Management of various lengths for outside personnel having certificate, diploma, or master’s degree in library and information science. This course covers all possible topics for managing a modern library including using library management software, charging and discharging, selection, procurement and evaluation procedure of library materials , use of web for providing resources to user, e-resources management, developing international linkage, literature searching in the web, practical using different types of databases etc. this training course is designed for both the ICDDRB staff and other library professionals of Bangladesh
Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB):
Bangladesh Library Association is a large association in Bangladesh. It regularly organizes training and seminar on different topics. In last year it organized several program that are given below:
- Training program on website development and management using joomla.
- International seminar on Vision 2021: the role of libraries for building digital Bangladesh
It provide some short course training ie. Certificate and diploma to the graduate level student to make them prepared in a short time to be able to manage their library. This can not be professional education.
